NAC-LWT Packaging Supports Accident Tolerant Fuel Program with Safe Transport of Advanced High Burnup Nuclear Fuel Rods

Peachtree Corners, GA — NAC International Inc. (NAC) recently completed a successful shipment of advanced high burnup nuclear fuel rods developed by GE Vernova’s Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), using the NAC-LWT Type B transportation packaging.
PNNL will examine the fuel rods, previously used at a commercial nuclear reactor for six years, as part of the DOE’s Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) program aimed at enhancing nuclear fuel efficiency, safety, and performance. PNNL will study the GNF fuel rods following extended use, conducting post-irradiation experiments to inform development, engineering, and licensing of fuels designed for higher exposures. The GNF fuel design is planned for use in the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR), aimed at supporting extended fuel cycle lengths and economic improvements.
“NAC is pleased to provide transportation services for this important DOE program using our proven NAC-LWT packaging,” said Mike McMahon, Vice President of Transportation and Strategic Projects. “Supporting fuel manufacturers such as GNF demonstrates our capabilities to provide critical services to teams developing SMRs and advanced reactors to meet future clean energy requirements.”
The NAC-LWT (Legal Weight Truck) has previously been deployed for hundreds of shipments of nuclear materials, including multiple trips in support of the ATF program.
