NAC International Plays Critical Role in Removal of Highly Enriched Uranium from Venezuela
Mission completed within three months — from first call to delivery at Savannah River Site
PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA — NAC International (NAC) today announced the successful completion of its role in the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) mission to remove all remaining highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Venezuela's RV-1 research reactor — a complex, time-critical operation executed from initial mobilization to delivery at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina in under three months.
On May 8, 2026, the NNSA announced the successful removal of 13.5 kilograms of HEU, which had remained in storage since the reactor was shut down in 1991. The mission was carried out in coordination with the Venezuelan Ministry of Science and Technology, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), U.S. Department of State personnel, and maritime transport partner Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) of the United Kingdom. NAC's scope of work was comprehensive and central to the mission's success. After receiving NNSA's call in early February 2026, NAC rapidly mobilized to implement the scope.
- Performed a site assessment at the RV-1 reactor facility to verify interfaces between NAC's NAC-LWT transportation cask, transfer equipment, and the site infrastructure.
- Oversaw the fabrication of two Materials Test Reactor (MTR) plate canisters — completed in just one month — by subcontractor HiLine.
- Prepared and mobilized the NAC-LWT cask and three 20-foot ISO containers of ancillary equipment, including NAC's Dry Transfer System and Intermediate Transfer System, to the RV-1 site in Venezuela.
- Set up the cask and equipment, complete dry runs, and load the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) into the NAC-LWT cask ahead of schedule.
- Prepared the loaded cask and auxiliary equipment for transport and coordinate delivery to SRS, working with partner Secured Transportation Services (STS).
